Why Most Job Listings Underperform
We analysed 500 job listings posted on MaritimeCrew Pro over the past 12 months to understand what separates high-performing listings from underperforming ones. The findings are clear and actionable.
Finding #1: Display Your Salary Range
Listings that display a salary range receive 3.1x more applications than listings that say "salary TBD." This is our single most consistent finding.
Practical tip: "β¬4,000 β β¬4,800/month" is significantly more effective than "Competitive salary offered."
Finding #2: Include Vessel Specifications
Listings that include vessel type, size (LOA), flag state and home port receive 2.2x more relevant applications. Be specific:
- β "58m motor yacht, Cayman Islands flag, home-ported in Antibes"
- β "Large private yacht"
Finding #3: Specify the Contract Type Clearly
Seasonal, permanent, rotational and delivery positions attract very different candidate pools. Be explicit about:
- Duration (e.g. "April β October 2025 season" or "permanent year-round")
- Rotation schedule if applicable (e.g. "6 weeks on / 6 weeks off")
- Whether the vessel has a fixed home port or is itinerant
Finding #4: Include Certification Requirements β But Be Realistic
Over-specifying requirements significantly reduces your applicant pool without improving quality. Distinguish clearly between required and preferred certifications.
Finding #5: A Compelling Job Description
The best listings include:
- A brief description of the vessel's typical programme (charter / private, regions)
- The number of crew aboard
- What a typical week looks like
- What makes this position an attractive opportunity
Response Time Matters
Employers who respond to applications within 24 hours have a 67% higher acceptance rate when they make an offer. The best candidates are typically in contact with multiple employers simultaneously β delay means losing them.
